Emirates Airline – Company Overview

Emirates is one of the two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates, alongside Etihad Airways. Headquartered in Garhoud, Dubai, the airline is a subsidiary of The Emirates Group, which is wholly owned by the Investment Corporation of Dubai, the principal investment arm of the Government of Dubai. Founded on 15 March 1985, Emirates was established with backing from Dubai’s leadership following a reduction in services to Dubai by regional carriers. The airline began operations with two wet-leased aircraft from Pakistan International Airlines, supported by a start-up capital of US$10 million, with a mandate to operate without government subsidies. Emirates operated its first flights in October 1985, and by 1987, took delivery of its first owned aircraft. The airline experienced rapid expansion throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, achieving average annual growth of 30% during its early years.
