NMC Health (Arabic: مستشفى المركز الطبي الجديد) was a major private healthcare and medical distribution group headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with operations across Dubai, Ajman, Al Ain, and the Northern Emirates. Founded in 1974 by B. R. Shetty, the organisation grew to operate and manage over 200 healthcare facilities across 19 countries, becoming the largest private healthcare provider in the UAE at its peak.
NMC Health provided a wide range of medical services, including hospitals, specialty clinics, diagnostics, fertility treatment, long-term care, and pharmacy retail. Its distribution arm, NMC Trading, handled the wholesale distribution of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, consumer goods, and healthcare supplies, representing leading global brands such as Nestlé, Pfizer, Siemens, Samsung, Sanofi, and Henkel.
From the mid-1990s onward, NMC expanded rapidly across the UAE and internationally. The company achieved several milestones, including JCIA accreditation for its hospitals and a listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2012. Through strategic acquisitions—such as Clínica Eugin in Spain, Al Zahra Hospital in the UAE, Fakih IVF, Provita, and Americare Group—NMC positioned itself as a leading integrated healthcare provider, particularly in women’s health, fertility, rehabilitation, and long-term care.
However, in 2019, the company faced a major financial crisis after revelations that billions of dollars in debt had been undisclosed. In April 2020, NMC Health was placed into administration by the UK High Court following insolvency linked to alleged financial misconduct. In 2023, the UK Financial Conduct Authority censured the company for market abuse related to the understatement of debt, though no financial penalty was imposed due to the company’s financial condition.
Despite its collapse, NMC Health remains a significant case study in the rapid rise and fall of a global healthcare organization, having once delivered healthcare services to millions of patients while employing thousands of medical professionals worldwide.
