History and Growth: Emirates was founded on 15 March 1985 following a reduction in services to Dubai by Gulf Air. Backed by Dubai’s royal family and launched with USD 10 million in start-up capital, the airline was required to operate independently without government subsidies. Its first two aircraft were provided by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), which also supported initial crew training. The airline’s inaugural flights began in October 1985 to Karachi and Mumbai. Rapid expansion followed, with new destinations added across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. In 1987, Emirates took delivery of its first owned aircraft, marking a major milestone in its growth.

Despite regional challenges, including the Gulf War, Emirates maintained strong momentum, achieving average annual growth of approximately 30% during its early years. By the early 1990s, it secured valuable slots at London Heathrow, further strengthening its global network. Fleet and Network :Emirates operates an all-wide-body fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, making it one of the few airlines worldwide to do so. As of January 2026, the airline is the world’s largest Airbus A380 operator, with 116 aircraft in service, and also the largest Boeing 777 operator, with 133 aircraft.
