or more than 20 years, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) has played an important role in Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system, particularly in the treatment of complex medical conditions. Known for its specialist services and advanced clinical capabilities, the medical city provides care for patients of different ages, ranging from newborn babies to older adults.
SKMC is home to the UAE’s first and most comprehensive transplant programme and is also recognized as the largest teaching hospital in the region. Its multidisciplinary environment brings together specialists from numerous medical fields, allowing patients with complicated conditions to receive coordinated care in one institution.
One recent case that highlights this approach involved a young baby named Luna, who faced a series of serious health complications shortly after birth. Her condition included complex congenital heart disease and heart failure, requiring intensive medical attention and several highly specialized procedures.
Luna’s treatment involved professionals from paediatrics, cardiology, neonatal cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, and cardiac surgery. The different teams worked together throughout her treatment, combining specialist knowledge with advanced medical technology to address the challenges that emerged during her recovery.

Her medical journey was particularly difficult. In addition to heart failure, Luna experienced colitis, seizures, and other serious complications. At one stage, she required ECMO life support in the paediatric intensive care setting. She also underwent aortic valve dilatation, a procedure used to improve blood flow through a narrowed aortic valve.
Her condition became even more complicated when she developed sepsis and required additional surgery following a bowel problem. Despite the severity of her condition and the number of procedures involved, the medical teams continued to monitor her closely and adjust her treatment according to her changing needs.
Dr. Benedict Raj, Consultant Paediatric Cardiac Surgeon at SKMC, led the medical team responsible for Luna’s care. He described her recovery as an example of how collaboration between different departments can make a significant difference when treating critically ill children. The case required a combination of cardiac procedures, intensive care, surgery, and continuous specialist support.
Dr. Toefig, Paediatric Cardiology Consultant and Congenital Interventionist at SKMC, also highlighted the strength of the wider SEHA network. According to him, the combination of diverse medical expertise, advanced technology, and dedicated healthcare professionals plays an important role in achieving positive outcomes for patients with complex conditions.
For Luna’s parents, the experience was understandably emotional and challenging. The compassionate approach of the medical team provided reassurance during a difficult period, while the successful treatment eventually allowed Luna to leave the hospital and return home with her family.
SKMC forms part of SEHA, a healthcare network under PureHealth, one of the largest healthcare platforms in the Middle East. Significant investment in medical expertise, technology, specialist programmes, and clinical infrastructure continues to support the development of healthcare services across the UAE.
The story of Luna reflects more than a successful medical outcome. It demonstrates the importance of teamwork, specialist knowledge, advanced treatment options, and compassionate care when managing some of the most challenging medical cases. Through its clinical expertise and teaching environment, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City continues to contribute to the advancement of specialist healthcare in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE.
